| December 30th 2003 Big Whiskey and Noah Hunt & The 420 All-Stars played Stanley's pub. 9:30 - 10:30 Dan Varner 10:30-12:00 Big Whiskey 12:15-1:15 Noah Hunt and The 420 All-Stars 1:15- 2:15 Big Whiskey Big Whiskey celebrated their 3rd annual New Years Eve party with a gig at Stanley's Pub in Cincinnati. Noah Hunt fan "Blue Rose" was there that evening to celebrate with the bands and share her night with us. Clark Jenkins and Brad Kelly officially welcomed bass player Alex Hughes into the group. Alex is known in Cincinnati through his work with Uncle Six and Noah Hunt & the 420 All-Stars. The opening act Dan Varner did a great job warming people up, ( Dan recently was awarded Best New Country Singer-Songwriter in Cincy )then Big Whiskey took the stage about 10:30pm. Blue Rose tells us "They played their first set and Alex sounded great with them, I think he may be the touch to put them out there. I Don't know Big Whiskey's songs but they sounded great, a mix of their original songs and also some cool covers." first set was something like this: 1. Pondering 2. Tell Me 3. Sweet Chicago 4. Crazy Women 5. New York 6. Vineyard 7. May the Circle Be Unbroken 8. One World 9. Gin N Juice 10 Walking In Memphis 11. Shine On Big Whiskey's drummer Ryan had a bad case of the flu so he couldn't make the show but Blue Rose got to meet and talk with Brad, Clark and Alex throughout the night. "Brad was very sweet and he asked me if I was enjoying the show and I said hell yeah" she tells us. In the next set, Noah Hunt played guitar with Alex Hughes on bass, Dan Hunt on rythym guitar and Brad Kelly filling in on lead guitar for "Snake" who was in the hospital with the flu . Noah actually played his set on Clark Jenkin's acoustic Taylor guitar. Noah and Alex also told Blue Rose "That regular 420 All-Stars drummer Todd Knapke ran off and got married and then went to Mexico, Noah joked 'well we will never see him again' and the guys all laughed hard. So with Noah, Alex, Dan & Brad it was just a little different but they were good. Noah looked great. His hair is almost to his shoulders and he's got a good beard going. They played their Uncle Six songs, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band song 'Shot gun Blues' and the regular cover tune 'All new Minglewood blues." Noah played for a little over an hour with more highlights like, King Bee, Go For A Ride, Long Black Train, Alone, Pretty Bird, and Goin Down to Alabama, The 420 's sounded awesome as usual. "There was about a half hour wait and then Big Whiskey got back on stage and played about an hour more. I spoke with Noah and the guys about my missing the 420 All-Stars show last week at the Blue Note and they joked that they always have a bad show when I'm not there. But they did tell me it all went great that night and they were excited about the addition of singer Carole Walker to the group, who made her debut with them at the December 20th Blue Note show." Blue Rose told us. All these musicians seemed to be very respectful of each others talents. "Singer/songwriter Clark Jenkins commented to me about how good Noah performance was and joked 'I can't go back on after Noah, I just can't.' There was a mixed crowd at Stanley's which was packed, with Big Whiskey fans, Noah's fans and the regulars. Big Whiskey's CD they released earlier this year was available for sale at the show. It was a great New Years Eve for me, I thought it was a nice idea to have it a day earlier!" |
